Your partner served. The return comes deep to you. One opponent is at the kitchen line and the returner is running up.

  1. Running in behind a drive puts their fast block right at your feet

    A drive comes back as fast as it goes. Hold your spot until they reply, then drop the next ball and move up.

  2. A drop that lands in their kitchen makes them hit up and buys you time

    Aim for the middle of their kitchen, then walk up side by side with your partner. Pause each time they hit.

  3. A deep drive keeps you in the point, but it leaves them the kitchen line

    They volley it back deep. Take it off the bounce from back there, and you still need a drop to reach the line.

Your drop landed in their kitchen. You're halfway up, and their soft reply is coming back low toward your feet.

  1. Good drop, but staying put leaves the next ball landing at your feet again

    Each good drop buys time to step closer. At the line, their next soft ball reaches you higher and easier to play.

  2. A ball below the net must go up, so your drive arrives as an easy volley

    From your feet, a drive must rise, so it reaches them chest high. They punch it down. Save drives for high balls.

  3. Dropping the low ball back makes them hit up again while you move in

    The ball is below the net, so lift it softly into their kitchen. Walk up while it flies, and pause as they hit.

New point. You returned their serve and reached the line. Their third shot drops low into your kitchen as they walk up.

  1. Dinking it back keeps them hitting up while they are still walking in

    The bounce stays below the net, so lift it softly over. You may step into the kitchen after it bounces.

  2. Stepping back lets the drop sink to your shoelaces before you can hit it

    Stay at the line and meet it at the top of its bounce. Farther back, it is near the floor and dinks hit the net.

  3. A deep ball keeps the point going, but it floats up for them to volley

    Lifting a low ball deep makes it rise, and they meet it near their line. A dink makes them hit up instead.
